More Korean poultry banned

May 02, 2014

The Centre for Food Safety has banned the import of poultry and poultry products, including eggs, from Sejong Special Autonomous City in Korea.

The ban was imposed after the centre was notified by the World Organisation for Animal Health about an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza on a poultry farm in the city.

The centre has contacted Korean authorities and will monitor the situation.

About 5,700 tonnes of frozen and chilled poultry meat and 6.7 million poultry eggs were imported to Hong Kong from Korea last year.

An import ban in effect since earlier this year on the same items from North Jeolla, South Jeolla, North Chungcheong, South Chungcheong, Gyeonggi and South Gyeongsang provinces remains in force.
