Green burials on the rise

April 11, 2014

Efforts to promote green burial are having a positive effect, as more people are opting to scatter cremated ashes at sea or in Gardens of Remembrance, the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department says.

Speaking at an award presentation ceremony for a Green Burial Poster Design Competition, the department’s Assistant Director (Grade Management & Development) Chu Lan-ying said there were 3,151 green burial cases in 2013, a five-fold increase on those in 2008.

Up to the end of 2013, people had created 5,900 memorial webpages under the Internet Memorial Service up to 2013, with a hit rate of over 1.64 million.

Five students were awarded for their outstanding poster designs. The competition aimed to enhance young people’s understanding of green burial.

An exhibition showcasing the entries at the department’s Health Education Exhibition & Resource Centre at Kowloon Park will run for 30 days.
