Pretty, poisonous

Pretty, poisonous:  A cosmetic cream called Santen may contain mercury at levels thousands of times higher than the acceptable standard.

Warning issued on cosmetic cream

April 09, 2014

The Department of Health asks people not to use the cosmetic cream Santen, as it may contain excessive mercury levels.

The department investigated after the Hospital Authority alerted it to a 28-year-old woman with mercury poisoning.

She had a swollen face and was admitted to Queen Mary Hospital on March 17. She had high levels of mercury in her blood.

A friend gave her the cream and she had used it for about a month. Tests showed the product had mercury levels at 15,211 times the acceptable standard.

The department urged people to stop using the product, and to consult health-care professionals if they feel unwell or are in doubt.

It also asked people not to buy or use cosmetic products of unknown composition or from doubtful sources.
