The Advisory Council on AIDS today launched a public consultation on the draft HIV Infection & Health Care Workers - Recommended Guidelines, which will run until September 16.
The guidelines provide information and guidance for addressing the complex and sensitive subject of HIV infection and healthcare workers in the local setting.
The current guidelines, formulated in 1994, were last updated in 2003. In view of expanded scientific knowledge in the field and local developments over the last decade, the council has reviewed and revised the guidelines.
Updated areas in the guidelines include the risk of HIV transmission, infection control, counselling and testing, and the rights and responsibilities of healthcare workers, including updates on the global HIV epidemiology, overseas risk and incidents of healthcare provider-patient HIV transmission.
It will also include an update on the terminology on infection control.
