Welfare allowances to rise

January 28, 2013
The standard payment rates under the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance Scheme, and the rates of Old Age Allowance and Disability Allowance under the Social Security Allowance plan will rise in February, the Social Welfare Department announced today.

It earlier proposed to increase the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance Scheme's standard payment rates, and the rates of Old Age Allowance and Disability Allowance, by 4%, in line with the movement of the Social Security Assistance Index of Prices.

The proposal has been approved by the Legislative Council and will take effect on February 1.

The department said the move will cost $1 billion per year, and will benefit 1.1 million recipients.

The maximum rent allowance under the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance Scheme will also rise by 7.8% from the same day.
