Woman ill after consuming herbs

December 28, 2012
The Department of Health is investigating a case of solanaceous alkaloid poisoning involving the consumption of Chinese herbs by a 63-year-old woman.

The Hospital Authority notified the department that the woman fell ill on December 22 after consuming Chinese herbal medicines dispensed by licensed retailer Cheung Hong Medical Company in Tsing Yi. She was treated in a public hospital and was discharged on December 25.

She was given 13 Chinese herbs by the retailer. Samples obtained from the retailer for chemical analysis contained solanaceous alkaloids, which cause symptoms like blurred vision, dry mouth, dizziness and confusion, and can lead to death in severe cases.

The department urged people with Chinese herbs dispensed by the retailer to stop using them, and seek advice from doctors if they feel unwell.
