Caesium detected in Japanese oats

Caesium detected in Japanese oats

August 01, 2012

A sample of oats imported from Japan and collected recently from a local retail outlet has been found to have a low level of radioactivity, the Centre for Food Safety says, adding there is no health concern in consuming the affected product.

It is Nihonshokuhin Premium Pure Oatmeal manufactured by Nippon Food Manufacturer imported from Hokkaido.

The centre collected the sample from a local supermarket for radiation testing under the regular food surveillance programme. A low level of a radioactive substance, Caesium-137 was detected, but it did not exceed the guideline levels of the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

An internal dose at about 90g of oats daily, a high consumption, would not have adverse health effects. Therefore the supermarket concerned was not ordered to recall the product but was informed of the test result.
Radioactivity detected: A Nihonshokuhin Premium Pure Oatmeal sample has been found to have a low level of radioactivity.
