H5 virus found in dead birds

January 03, 2012
Two dead black-headed gulls found in Tuen Mun and on Lantau Island have tested positive for the H5 avian influenza virus in preliminary checks.

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department is conducting confirmatory tests.

The first bird was collected at the EcoPark in Tuen Mun on December 30, while the second was found in a drain near Sha Lo Wan Soccer Pitch on Lantau, on January 1.

The bird is a common winter visitor to Hong Kong.
