Better drug dispensing urged

Better drug dispensing urged

September 22, 2011

Acting Secretary for Food & Health Professor Gabriel Leung has urged healthcare workers to strictly observe procedures and guidelines to ensure correct administration of drugs to patients.

He made the plea today after the Prince of Wales Hospital released its report on the death of an elderly patient.

It was found the 73-year-old woman took wrongly dispensed anti-hypertensive and diabetes drugs in July. An investigation panel said there was lax communication between the duty resident doctor and the house officer.

Prof Leung said hospital management should thoroughly study the report and actively follow up on its recommendations to prevent a recurrence of the incident. The authority said it will ensure the hospital implements the recommended measures.

The hospital will assume responsibility for the incident and help the victim's family.
