$6k handout registration to start Aug 28

June 16, 2011
Starting August 28, the first batch of eligible residents will be invited to register to  receive a $6,000 handout, part of Financial Secretary John Tsang’s proposals to leave wealth with the people.

Assuming the Legislative Council Finance Committee approves the $37.9753 billion for the “Scheme $6,000” on July 8th, the first batch of payments will be paid out in early November.

About 6.1 million residents - those aged 18 or above as of March 31, 2012, and hold a permanent Hong Kong identity card or certificate of exemption - will be eligible for the handout.

Registration will be arranged in five batches according to the year of birth, starting from the eldest. Those born in or before 1946 will be the first to register, for two weeks starting August 28.

Eligible registrants can expect payments about 10 weeks after they register.

The initial registration period will close on March 31, 2012. To help stagger registrations, a $200 bonus will be given to those who register after this date. They will have from April 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012 to sign up.

Those eligible will be able to register through 21 retail banks in Hong Kong and receive payments through their bank accounts. Those without a bank account can register with Hongkong Post and collect an order cheque at a post office. The cheques can be encashed at the cheque-printing agent, Standard Chartered Bank.

Registration forms will be available from bank branches, Home Affairs Department district offices, district Social Welfare offices, and public-housing estate offices. They will also be available online.
