A pilot project has been launched to offer free Wi-Fi services at government venues through public-private collaboration.
The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer today announced the official launch of the Wi-Fi.HK public-private collaboration project.
The project covers the Cultural Centre and its piazza, Queen Elizabeth Stadium, the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum, Sha Tin Town Hall, Man Kam To Control Point, the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and the Hong Kong Coliseum.
Under Secretary for Innovation & Technology David Chung said more government venues will be outfitted with free Wi-Fi services through the scheme.
"We shall open up more suitable government venues through public-private collaboration for private service providers to install equipment and provide Wi-Fi service with free usage time at their own cost.
"Private service providers are allowed to offer value-added services at these venues without any financing from the Government while the public and tourists can enjoy free Wi-Fi service. This arrangement is favourable to all."
Future venues to be covered by the scheme include parks, public transport interchanges and markets.
The Wi-Fi.HK scheme was launched in 2014 to provide free Wi-Fi services across the city.
So far there are more than 19,800 Wi-Fi hotspots provided by about 50 organisations.
The download rate for the Wi-Fi.HK mobile app has exceeded 240,000.
