Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So has signed a deal to foster exchanges and co-operation with the Mainland in intellectual property.

He signed the Co-operation Arrangement in the Area of Intellectual Property today with Commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office Shen Changyu.

Under the arrangement, Hong Kong and the Mainland will exchange information on intellectual property laws and protection, publicity and education.

They will also collaborate to study and promote the development of intellectual property trading, co-organise exhibitions and seminars, and further co-operate in the area of patents.

Mr So said the office has been providing Hong Kong with staunch support and technical assistance in its work on intellectual property.

"The arrangement reaffirms the critical role played by intellectual property in promoting innovation and economic growth nowadays.

"It also provides an important basis for both sides to strengthen future exchanges and co-operation.

"I look forward to joint efforts by Hong Kong and the Mainland to explore, develop and embrace new opportunities in the area of intellectual property for mutual benefits."
