Jobless rate steady at 3.2%

May 19, 2017

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.2% in the February to April quarter, matching the January-March period, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.

The underemployment rate also remained unchanged at 1.2%.

Total employment decreased by 5,700 to 3,816,700, and the labour force dropped by 3,500 to 3,943,900.

There were 125,000 unemployed people and 48,800 underemployed people.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Stephen Sui said: "The unemployment rates of many sectors were lower than their year-ago levels alongside the improving economic conditions on entering 2017."

He said the labour market is expected to remain tight in the near term and the Government will monitor the potential impact of external uncertainties on the local economy.
