Consumer prices up 1.3%

February 21, 2017

Overall consumer prices rose 1.3% year-on-year in January, the Census & Statistics Department said today.

Netting out the effects of the Government's one-off relief measures, the underlying inflation rate was 2.1%, compared to 2% in December.

Year-on-year price increases were recorded for miscellaneous services, meals bought away from home, miscellaneous goods, transport, food, as well as alcohol and tobacco.

Year-on-year price decreases were recorded for electricity, gas and water, durable goods as well as clothing and footwear.

The department said inflation pressure stayed moderate in January.

Looking ahead, inflation pressure should stay under control in the near term, given soft import prices and moderate local cost increases, it added.
