Brexit closely watched: FS

June 26, 2016

Financial Secretary John Tsang says the Brexit decision was a surprise and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will closely watch how Britain proceeds with the move.

Speaking to reporters after returning from Beijing today, Mr Tsang said the global foreign exchange and stock markets experienced heavy fluctuation after the decision.

The Hong Kong stock market was no exception, but remained orderly.

He expects the markets to remain volatile, adding that the Government prepared for Brexit by conducting stress tests and boosted regulation.

On joining the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Mr Tsang said Hong Kong will continue discussion with the bank's president with the aim to join it early next year.
