Upgrades coming for HK Disneyland

June 16, 2016

Hong Kong Disneyland will open new attractions to draw tourists, including a new Iron Man-themed area and an exploration-themed hotel.

Speaking on the opening of Shanghai Disneyland today, Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So told reporters Hong Kong Disneyland will continue to expand its range of attractions.

He said the focus of Hong Kong Disneyland and Shanghai Disneyland is different. He said Hong Kong Disneyland caters to international tourists, while its Shanghai counterpart focuses on domestic visitors.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board has distributed over 60% of its promotion budget on areas outside the Mainland, for example Southeast Asian countries. There has been a 7.8% growth in non-Mainland overnight arrivals in the first four months this year.

A series of mega events will be held in the short term to boost tourism, including the Wine & Dine Festival, the Hong Kong Cyclothon and the Formula E Championship Hong Kong ePrix.

On MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) travel, Mr So said business travellers are important for tourism as they spend 10% to 15% more than common visitors. He said the Tourism Board will strive to attract more MICE visitors.
