Financial Secretary John Tsang visited New York today on the first leg of his United States visit.

Mr Tsang met with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic & Social Affairs Wu Hongbo, and was briefed on the UN's latest action to promote worldwide economies' sustainable development.

He discussed the global economic outlook at a lunch with financial sector leaders and called on Chinese Consul-General to New York Zhang Qiyue.

He visited the New York Genome Centre, a leading genomic and biomedical research institute which also provides incubation programmes for biotech start-ups.

At an Asia Society seminar on Hong Kong, Mr Tsang introduced the city's latest economic and financial developments, in particular, its advantages as the premier asset management centre in Asia and the world's pre-eminent offshore renminbi centre.

"As an international financial centre, we have been attracting, and will continue to do so, a world of business and investment," Mr Tsang said.

He added that last year, Hong Kong's stock market ranked second, globally, in terms of funds raised in initial public offerings, just behind the United States, and at the end of August this year, more than 1,800 companies were listed, including Mainland and overseas companies.

The finance chief will continue his New York visit tomorrow before heading for Washington, DC in the afternoon. He will then join the Chinese delegation at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group annual meetings in Peru on October 9.
