Support measures not political: FS

February 27, 2015

Financial Secretary John Tsang today denied accusations that support measures in the 2015-16 Budget for sectors affected by last year's Occupy movement were included as a political move.

In Wednesday's Budget, Mr Tsang announced one-off fee waivers for travel agents, hotels, restaurants, hawker stall owners, taxi drivers and commercial drivers to help bolster confidence in the local economy in the wake of the protests.

Addressing reporters after a radio phone-in programme this morning to discuss his Budget measures, Mr Tsang stressed that the Government's only concern was commercial sentiment in Hong Kong and he did not see the fee waivers as "compensation" for those industries.

The finance chief also quoted overseas media as saying that the city's global image had been affected by the protests, so it was necessary for the Government to allocate more resources to boosting Hong Kong's image abroad.
