The Office of the Communications Authority has issued a warning to a tutor referral company in Tsing Yi Estate for sending commercial electronic messages via WhatsApp, contravening the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Ordinance.
Staff from the office visited the company today after receiving many complaints it had been using the group chat function of WhatsApp Messenger to send out a large number of commercial electronic messages to promote its tutor referral service.
The messages were sent to recipient telephone numbers within a chat group that shared the same prefix.
The person running the tutor referral service was reminded that contravention of the ordinance warrants five-years' jail and a $1 million fine.
