Lights, camera, action:  Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So (right) visits the Opus 1 film set on November 1.

Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So visited the film set of Opus 1 and encouraged up-and-coming director Cheung King-wai and his production team to use the experience to pursue a movie career.

Opus 1 seeks to explore human nature through depicting a real-life murder case and is supported by Create Hong Kong's First Feature Film Initiative.

The young director explained to Mr So how his film has benefited from the initiative, and spoke of the challenges encountered during the filming process. Some of the cast told Mr So about their acting experiences.

The commerce chief said the initiative gives young talents who want to work in the industry a chance to make their first feature films on a commercial basis and show their flair, while promoting the long-term development of the industry itself.

"I am pleased to see the enthusiasm of the director, the production team and the actors, and am looking forward to watching this local production on the big screen with other audience members," Mr So said.

Under the initiative, the Film Development Fund will cover the full production costs for winners of a screenplay and production proposal competition, with a $2 million cap per film for student teams and a $5 million cap per film for professional teams.

Two other films receiving funding support are Weeds on Fire and Mad World.
