Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So chaired the sixth meeting of the Working Group on Intellectual Property Trading today.
The group deliberated on the Government's efforts and plans on enhancing the local IP protection regime.
Mr So said a robust protection regime will increase Hong Kong's value and attractiveness as a marketplace to both local and international IP players.
The group identified two focus strategies, which are to develop an “original grant" patent system in Hong Kong in parallel with the existing re-registration system, and to ensure the local IP regime is on a par with international norms.
He said the group plans to launch the original grant patent system in 2016-17 at the earliest.
He also called for updates to the local copyright regime to keep pace with technological advancements and economic developments.
