Boundary area malls under study

April 09, 2014

A preliminary feasibility study on developing the New Territories North will consider proposals for developing business and shopping centres, Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So says.

In response to a legislator's question today, Mr So said developing such centres could redirect visitors to these areas, alleviating pressure on popular tourist areas while creating new job opportunities.

The study will examine the feasibility of economic development and job creation near Lok Ma Chau, Man Kam To and Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai boundary control points, and will identify potential areas for development, he said.

It will also determine land uses, development scale, preliminary technical feasibility and the major supporting infrastructure that would be required.

"Public engagement activities will be carried out during the course of the study, and the study will take into account the proposal for developing business and shopping centres, should there be any.”

The Development Bureau expects the study to be completed around mid-2015.
