Gov't: TV licences not a political issue

October 20, 2013
Approving two additional free TV licence applications neither protects existing interests nor serves any political consideration, the Commerce & Economic Development Bureau says.

In response to media enquiries on the topic, the bureau said today that granting three applications at once would not be favourable to the market.

The Government was notified four days ago of the filing of an application for leave to apply for judicial review, the details of which are not appropriate to be made public as they could affect legal proceedings.

The bureau reiterated that, according to established procedures, discussion content of Executive Council meetings is not made public, and each licence application is handled in accordance with statutory requirements, so as to ensure healthy and orderly market development.
