Cable-car inquiry ordered

January 26, 2012
Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So has instructed the operator of the Ngong Ping 360 cable car system to review and improve its crisis management and passenger communication.

Meeting the operator today, Mr So expressed the Government’s high concern about yesterday’s breakdown, which left scores of passengers stranded in mid-air. The breakdown was the latest in several recent incidents to affect the cable car service, which has been suspended for 10 days for checks.

Mr So told the operator to improve its contingency plans for emergencies, its communication with passengers when incidents occur, and its service-suspension notifications.

He said it must ensure passenger safety and consider their feelings. Dissemination of information must be timely and detailed.

Electrical & Mechanical Services Department officers are inspecting the system. All bearings along the cable will be thoroughly checked and repaired or replaced, and the system will undergo rigorous tests before reopening.
