ATV fined for misreporting Jiang Zemin's death

Asia Television Limited has been fined $300,000 for misreporting news of the death of former national leader Jiang Zemin, the Broadcasting Authority announced today.
 
The authority said complaints were received against the misreporting of news of Mr Ziang's death broadcast on the Home and World Channels of ATV on July 6 and 7.
 
The authority found the complaints about inaccurate news reporting and the late correction of factual errors substantiated.
 
It regrets ATV's adoption of an irresponsible approach in its response to the authority’s inquiry, and fined ATV $300,000.
 
Regarding complaints against the television programme Wealth Blog broadcast on ATV’s Home Channel on July 19 and 21, the authority seriously warned the broadcaster to observe more closely the relevant provisions in the TV Programme Code.
 
As for complaints against the advertising magazine Corporate Excellence broadcast on ATV’s Home Channel on May 29 and August 21, the authority warned ATV to observe more closely the relevant provisions in the TV Advertising Code.
