All beaches reopened

August 18, 2017

The Leisure & Cultural Services Department has reopened the last two beaches closed due to the palm stearin spill.

Hung Shing Yeh Beach and Lo So Shing Beach were reopened after cleanup operations were completed today.

All 13 affected beaches have now been reopened.

About 120 staff from the LCSD, the Marine Department, the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department, the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department and the Environmental Protection Department conducted beach inspections and cleanup operations today.

As of noon, 212 tonnes of palm stearin had been recovered.

The departments will continue to monitor the situation and arrange immediate collection of any recyclable palm stearin recovered to turn it into biodiesel or other recycled products.
