Cleanups improving beaches

August 17, 2017

A gradual improvement has been observed in the condition of beaches and waterways as government departments continue cleaning up the palm stearin spill.

About 120 staff from the Leisure & Cultural Services Department, the Marine Department, the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department, the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department and the Environmental Protection Department continued beach inspections and cleanup operations today and reported an improvement in conditions.

The oil content of water samples collected from beaches remains at a low level.

The condition of the 11 beaches reopened so far is satisfactory.

As of noon today, 211 tonnes of palm stearin had been recovered.
