3 more beaches reopen

August 16, 2017

The Leisure & Cultural Services Department has reopened Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay and Chung Hom Kok beaches following satisfactory palm stearin cleanup operations.

About 150 staff from the LCSD, the Marine Department, the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department, the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department and the Environmental Protection Department conducted beach inspections and cleanup operations today.

The oil content of water samples collected from beaches remained at a low level.

As of noon today, 211 tonnes of palm stearin had been recovered.

The LCSD will continue to conduct routine cleanups at the 11 beaches reopened so far and the departments will continue to monitor the situation and enhance cleanup work to reopen beaches as soon as possible.

The EPD has approached two local biodiesel companies to collect the recovered palm stearin and recycle it into biodiesel or other products.
