Smoky shrine fined

May 18, 2017

A Taoist shrine in Hung Hom was fined $10,000 by Kwun Tong Magistracy today for smoke emission.

The Environmental Protection Department found the upstairs shrine on Lo Lung Hang Street did not install air pollution control equipment for its joss paper furnace, affecting nearby residents.

The shrine also failed to observe the statutory notice issued by the department to fix or replace the furnace.

Its operator was convicted for violating the Air Pollution Control Ordinance.

The department said places of worship must install proper air pollution control equipment to deal with ashes and smoke from burning paper offerings, and observe statutory notices to carry out remedial measures.
