Secretary for the Environment KS Wong today chaired the third meeting of the Steering Group on the Modification of Recycling & Refuse Collection Facilities in Public Places.
Members listened to the key findings and recommendations of a consultation study to review the number and distribution of public recycling bins and litter containers.
The study showed the public wants more recycling bins and supports reducing the number of litter containers, to complement the future municipal solid waste charging plan.
The consultant noted there should be more recycling bins for pedestrians and people not served by the Source Separation of Waste programme, and there is room to reduce the number of litter containers.
It advises that specific recycling bins should be placed at appropriate locations to facilitate resource recovery, such as paper recycling bins at MTR exits where more waste paper is collected.
Recycling bins and litter containers should be placed at crossroads, and the entrances and exits of venues to encourage the public to use them.
Mr Wong said government departments will further consider the recommendations and report to the steering group on how to adjust the future provision of recycling bins and litter containers.
