Weather monitor:  Hong Kong Observatory Director Shun Chi-ming (front row, left), CAAC Deputy Administrator Wang Zhiqing (front row, centre) and CMA Deputy Administrator Jiao Meiyan (front row, right) signed the Asian Aviation Weather Centre agreement.

The Hong Kong Observatory, the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the China Meteorological Administration signed a co-operation agreement on the establishment of Asian Aviation Weather Centre in Beijing today.

The agreement brings the co-operation in aviation meteorology between Hong Kong and the Mainland to a new level.

Hong Kong Observatory Shun Chi-ming said that with sustained growth of air traffic in Asia, there is an increasing demand from aviation users for more and better weather services so as to enhance flight safety as well as efficiency.

Meanwhile, the international trend calls for regionalised, globalised, digitised and automated aviation weather services, which provide opportunities for enhancing the provision of services, he added.

The tripartite co-operation agreement initiates the establishment of the centre, targeting to provide the Asian region with high-quality enroute hazardous weather information from mid-2018.

Based on the agreement, CAAC is responsible for the establishment and operation of the main centre in Beijing. The HKO will set up a backup centre in Hong Kong, and provide technical and operational support. The CMA will set up a technological support centre to support the underlining operation platforms such as weather information exchange and numerical weather prediction.
