The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department and the Hong Kong Underwater Association jointly held a coastal clean-up campaign at Sharp Island in Sai Kung today.
The event was in support of International Coastal Clean-up Day.
Seventy volunteers collected 50kg of fishing gear and rubbish from the seabed and a beach.
The department said abandoned fishing gear on the seabed can kill marine life and its removal helps improve the marine environment and preserve marine resources.
The event also encourages divers and water-sports enthusiasts to get involved in keeping the sea clean and to appreciate the importance of protecting the marine ecology, it added.
