Regional air quality improves

June 28, 2016

Air quality in the Pearl River Delta improved last year, according to a report released by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Pearl River Delta Regional Air Quality Monitoring Network.

The average annual concentration levels of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and respirable suspended particulates in the region dropped 19%, 11% and 13% compared to the previous year.

The pollutants dropped 72%, 28% and 34% compared to 2006.

The figures show the measures implemented by Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau have contributed to the improvement of air quality in the region, the report said.

The 2015 average annual concentration level of ozone decreased 7% compared with the previous year, but increased 10% on the 2006 level.

The average annual concentration levels of fine suspended particulates and carbon monoxide for 2015 were recorded at 32 µg/m3 and 0.8 mg/m3.

The network includes 23 air monitoring stations in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau which test for six major air pollutants - sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, respirable suspended particulates, fine suspended particulates and carbon monoxide.
