KS Wong chairs recycling meeting

June 17, 2016

Secretary for the Environment KS Wong today chaired the second meeting of the Steering Group on the Modification of Recycling & Refuse Collection Facilities in Public Places.

A consultancy study has been commissioned to underpin the work of the steering group after it was established in February.

Group members discussed at the meeting a study plan prepared by the consultant which will provide recommendations later this year.

The group will formulate recommendations on the number and distribution as well as the key parameters for the design of the relevant facilities, based on the consultant's recommendations.

"The proposed modification of recycling and refuse collection facilities will form an integral part of the implementation plan of municipal solid waste charging," Mr Wong said, noting that the charging scheme is key to driving behavioural changes in waste reduction.

"We will further engage different stakeholders and consult the Legislative Council on the proposed implementation arrangements before introducing the enabling legislation on municipal solid waste charging in the 2016-17 legislative session."

The Government will launch extensive publicity and public education to prepare the community for the implementation of the charging, he added.
