Waste charge rise gazetted

May 06, 2016

The Waste Disposal (Charges for Disposal of Construction Waste) Regulation (Amendment of Schedules) Notice 2016 was gazetted today, which seeks to increase construction waste charges.

Landfill charges will rise from $125 to $200 per tonne, and the public fill charge will increase from $27 to $71 per tonne, to achieve full cost recovery.

The sorting charge will increase from $100 to $175 per tonne, to maintain the current differential between this charge and the landfill charge, and encourage the use of sorting facilities.

The Environmental Protection Department said construction waste disposal charges have not been adjusted since their introduction in 2006.

The proposed increase in the construction waste disposal charges come after a cost review.

The Amendment Notice will be tabled at the Legislative Council on May 11 and scheduled to come into effect next April.
