Water polluters to be charged

April 27, 2016

The Environmental Protection Department will prosecute the suspected parties involved in two cases of illegal wastewater discharge into Shing Mun River.

The first case occurred in early February when milky water was found in Fo Tan Nullah.

The department found that renovation materials from a Fo Tan logistic centre may have washed down into storm water drains and discharged into the nullah.

The other case occurred in late March when polluted water was found entering Shing Mun River from Mei Lam Estate.

Department officers found the sewage was being discharged from a shopping arcade into Shing Mun River via storm drains.

The department is gathering evidence to prosecute the parties involved, including property management companies.

Anyone who discharges wastewater into storm drains or directly into streams or the sea contravenes the Water Pollution Control Ordinance.

The department reminded building owners, property management companies, and construction and renovation contractors to ensure wastewater is not discharged into storm drains.
