A waterspout was seen off Kau Yi Chau about 8am today during heavy rain.
The Hong Kong Observatory said a south-westerly airstream has been bringing heavy rain and squally thunderstorms to Hong Kong in recent days, and led to today's waterspout.
From midnight to 4pm over 150mm of rain was recorded over the urban area, with up to 300mm over the western part of Hong Kong Island.
The south-westerly is forecast to persist over the Guangdong coast for the next few days causing more unsettled weather.
In Hong Kong, waterspouts are most commonly seen during the rainy season between May and October.
One was last spotted near Shek Pik last October.
There have been 33 reported waterspouts in Hong Kong since 1959.
