15 fined for shopping bags

June 02, 2015

Fifteen fixed penalty tickets were issued to retailers in May for not complying with the plastic shopping bag charging requirement.

The Environmental Protection Department said the majority of retailers have been complying with the new law since it came into full effect in April, and most shoppers have picked up the habit of bringing their own bags.

Officers have inspected more than 13,000 retail outlets and found only a few violations, mostly for providing free plastic bags for non-foodstuff items.

Retailers are subject to a fine of $2,000 or prosecution for giving out free bags for non-exempt items.

The department said it will continue publicising the new measures to help reduce plastic bag use.
