Multi-strategy to tackle light issues

May 27, 2015

The Government will adopt a multi-pronged approach to address energy wastage and light pollution.

Secretary for the Environment KS Wong made the comment today in response to the report submitted last month by the Task Force on External Lighting, which suggested a multi-pronged approach.

He said the Government will launch a charter scheme this year to encourage the switching off of external lighting installations for decorative, promotional or advertising purposes after a preset time.

Unnecessary lighting still on at government buildings and facilities after 11pm will be switched off.

The effectiveness of the move will be assessed after the scheme has run for two or three years.

The Government will also re-launch the Guidelines on Industry Best Practices for External Lighting Installations.

Other measures include formulating proposals to acknowledge the private sector’s contribution to alleviating problems caused by external lighting, organising public education and publicity programmes, and reporting to the Advisory Council on the Environment regularly on the implementation of the measures.
