Energy saving drive launched

May 15, 2015

The Environment Bureau and Electrical & Mechanical Services Department have launched the Energy Saving for All Campaign to encourage the community to save energy and make Hong Kong a low-carbon city.

Officiating at the launch ceremony at Central District Promenade today, Secretary for the Environment KS Wong said he hopes the campaign provides a good start for collaborative efforts from every sector of the community to save energy.

One of the major initiatives under the campaign is the Energy Saving Charter on Indoor Temperature launched in 2012. This year, about 2,800 participating developers and management companies have pledged to maintain the indoor temperature in their buildings at between 24 to 26 degrees Celsius during the mid-summer months. The number of participants has increased nearly 40% compared to last year.

A new website will be launched where people can find energy-saving tips, teaching kits and energy data.

The department will also hold a New Energy New Generation Solar Car Competition to raise awareness among undergraduates and secondary school students of renewable energy applications.

The Youth Energy Saving Award will be launched to encourage young people to team up and plan for energy saving measures. The winning team will receive a cash prize which they can donate to a youth services non-government organisation of their choice to help low income earners improve their living conditions.

To encourage people to take action and reduce their electricity consumption, the Government will launch a new TV announcement: "Save Energy with the Push of a Button" to remind people to take simple energy saving steps, such as switching off electrical appliances that are not in use.
