9,800 pre-Euro diesel vehicles retired

April 02, 2015

About 54% of the 18,100 owners of pre-Euro diesel commercial vehicles who are eligible for ex-gratia payments have scrapped their vehicles and submitted payment applications to the Environmental Protection Department.

The department today reminded owners of pre-Euro diesel commercial vehicles that applications for ex-gratia payments will close on December 31. Those who wish to apply should make arrangements early.

To improve roadside air quality and protect public health, the department launched the ex-gratia payment scheme last year to retire 82,000 pre-Euro IV diesel commercial vehicles in phases by the end of 2019.

Up to the end of February about 23,600 or 29% of eligible diesel commercial vehicles had been put in the scheme and retired. Among them, 9,800 are pre-Euro.
