Volunteers audit rugby waste

March 27, 2015

The Hong Kong Sevens has kicked off, attracting hordes of rugby fans from around the globe – who generate plenty of waste. A team of volunteers is auditing the trash, to develop a plan to reduce it in future.

The 50 volunteers, all from local universities, will collect data and samples during the matches, and will compile a report based on their survey. It will set the baseline so that future mega sporting events can aim for waste-reduction improvements and greater waste recovery.

The iconic FoodWise campaign mascot Big Waster is also returning to the event, to encourage spectators to adopt environmentally friendly measures. In particular, he will remind them to “use less, waste less” while enjoying the games.
