Refuse station fees cut

February 27, 2015

The Environmental Protection Department will open the Sha Tin Transfer Station for use by private waste collectors and reduce the fee at the Island East and Island West Transfer Stations on March 1.

By the end of this year, Tseung Kwan O landfill will receive only construction waste, and private waste collectors will no longer be able to dispose of domestic, commercial and industrial waste at the landfill.

To enable proper and convenient disposal of waste collected from Sha Tin, Tai Po and Sai Kung, the department will open the Sha Tin Transfer Station for private waste collectors at a service fee of $30 per tonne.

Waste collectors must first apply for an account before using the station for waste disposal, while existing registered account holders need not apply again.

The charge for the refuse transfer service at the Island East Transfer Station and the Island West Transfer Station will be reduced from $40 to $30 per tonne, to encourage waste collectors operating on Hong Kong Island to use nearby refuse transfer services and avoid cross-district delivery of waste.
