Landfill diversion

Landfill diversion:  Permanent Secretary for Transport & Housing Stanley Ying (third right) awarded a certificate to the winner of the Best Replanted Citrus Plant at Kwan Shing West Estate in the Public Housing Waste Reduction Campaign 2014 - Appreciation Ceremony  this month.

To protect the environment, the Housing Department will collect citrus plants from February 26, the 8th day of the Chinese New Year, to March 19, for repruning.

Residents can bring their citrus plants to designated areas in public housing estates during this period.

The collection scheme began in 2013. Last year, 5,000 plants were collected, and 4,000 of them were re-pruned, replanted and reused in public rental housing estates.

Since the department launched a waste-reduction campaign in all of its estates in the second half of last year, it has collected about 29,000 tonnes of refuse on average each month - down 7.5% since June 2014.

The department has since collected over a million glass bottles weighing about 500 tonnes, and more than 54,000 moon cake tins weighing about 16 tonnes.
