Green education scheme launched

December 01, 2014
Starting young

Starting young:  Tailor-made interactive three-colour recycling bins have been given to participating nursery schools and kindergartens for their environmental education efforts.

A pilot campaign to promote a "use less, waste less" culture to young children was launched in 50 nursery schools and kindergartens today by the Environmental Protection Department.

Secretary for the Environment KS Wong opened the campaign today, noting that the development of children's awareness of cherishing resources and reducing wastage in childhood is an important part of environmental education.

He called on the education sector to put more effort into cultivating a "use less, waste less" culture among the young generation.

The campaign is aimed at five to six year olds and features the concept of caring for the Earth.

Schools taking part in the programme were given an education package on waste reduction and a tailor-made, interactive, three-colour recycling bin designed specially at the right height for children to help teachers enhance environmental education.

Schools will also receive training and technical support to ensure the education kit is properly used.
