Spill drill:  Oil combat teams use floating barrier booms in the oil spill exercise.

A joint marine pollution response exercise co-ordinated by the Marine Department was held off Tuen Mun today to test responses in handling the spillage of oil and toxic substances in Hong Kong waters.

The exercise involved a mock spill caused by a collision between a diesel-leaking tanker and a chemical tanker leaking liquid acrylonitrile, posing a threat to the nearby environment and facilities.

Response groups contained and cleaned up the spills.

A shoreline oil clean-up drill was also conducted on the beach near Tsing Lung Garden.

The Civil Aid Service, Auxiliary Medical Service, Government Flying Service, Environmental Protection Department, Government Laboratory, Fire Services Department and Police participated in the exercise.

Several oil companies and Hong Kong Response also took part.
