Air quality pact starts

September 03, 2014

An agreement signed by the governments of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau to foster co-operation on air pollution control and prevention came into effect today.

The Co-operation Agreement on Regional Air Pollution Control & Prevention will improve air quality in the Pearl River Delta region.

It establishes a joint air quality monitoring platform for the three sides and arrangements to release jointly regional air quality information.

It will take forward air pollution control and prevention measures, and co-operation in scientific environmental studies; and foster exchanges and promotion activities on environmental technology.

The geographical coverage and spatial representation of the regional air quality monitoring network will be enhanced. The number of monitoring stations in Guangdong and Hong Kong will increase from 16 to 23, and the Taipa Grande monitoring station in Macau will be included in the network.

To provide more comprehensive real-time air quality information, the network will also release the concentration levels of air pollutants every hour, replacing the Regional Air Quality Index, which updates daily.
