Two marine parks to open

September 01, 2014

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department today announced a plan for the designation of Southwest Lantau Marine Park and Soko Islands Marine Park.

The department will launch another round of public engagement next year and seek to complete the required procedures for the designation by early-2017.

The proposed marine parks at Southwest Lantau and Soko Islands cover about 660 and 1,270 hectares of water, which are among the Chinese white dolphins' and finless porpoises’ major habitats.

In response to public concern about protection for Chinese white dolphins, the Government aims to expedite the designation plan to enhance and support the Chinese White Dolphin Conservation Programme.
