No smoking:  The Marine Department holds a seminar on dark smoke emissions in Southern District.

Smoke emission seminar held

August 14, 2014

The Marine Department held a seminar for local vessel owners, coxswains, boat operators and the public in Southern District today to brief them on the new legal requirements concerning dark smoke emissions from vessels.

Marine officers at the seminar reminded participants to comply with the new requirements, which came into effect on July 18.

They must prevent their vessels from emitting smoke darker than the allowed level, and ensure their vessels' engine and fuel systems are in good operating condition.

To strengthen public education, the department will hold seminars in other districts and will distribute leaflets and Micro-Ringelmann Charts to the maritime industry and the public.

To report vessels emitting excessive dark smoke call 2385 2791 or 2385 2792.
