Mosquito measures

Mosquito measures:  Food & Environmental Hygiene Department staff explain the operation of a mosquito trap in Tuen Mun.

Anti-mosquito measures enhanced

August 12, 2014

Food & Environmental Hygiene Department staff have stepped up anti-mosquito measures in Tuen Mun since the year’s third Japanese encephalitis case was reported on August 6.

The department said today its officers have been spraying pesticide near the residence of the patient involved in last week’s encephalitis case, and eliminated potential mosquito breeding grounds.

It has also enhanced liaison with nearby construction sites, estate management companies and schools, calling for strengthened mosquito prevention measures.

Meanwhile, the third phase of this year’s anti-mosquito campaign will launch on August 18. The eight-week campaign will see the department strengthen mosquito prevention measures and publicity efforts throughout Hong Kong.

Special attention will be paid to areas near residences, schools, construction sites, housing estates and hospitals. Department staff will also offer technical advice on mosquito prevention to the public.

During the campaign’s first two phases, more than 108,000 mosquito breeding sites and potential breeding sites were eliminated, and about 50 warning letters were issued.

The department is monitoring the presence of the mosquito vector for the disease, to collect specimens for Department of Health tests to see whether they are carrying the virus.
